The record label Glitch Please has released a new album by Estonian émigré composer Olev Muska titled My Mouth Sang / My Heart Sank, based on Finno‑Ugric folk songs as arranged by Veljo Tormis.

The album My Mouth Sang / My Heart Sank draws on Veljo Tormis’s settings of Finno‑Ugric folk songs and continues Muska’s decades‑long dialogue between traditional folk material and contemporary musical language.

The album weaves together archaic song structures, electronic textures, samples, and the composer’s own voice. While Muska’s earlier projects have focused primarily on instrumental and studio‑based approaches, this release also features him as a vocal performer, adding an intimate and deeply personal dimension to the music.

“I believe I have every right to engage in a dialogue with the ghosts of my past.
From the moment Veljo Tormis opened my ears to the contemporary interpretation of ancient Estonian song, I have felt fascinated — compelled to search for and unravel the clues left to me by my ancestors.
Tormis’s investigative journey into the music of kindred peoples, the ancient Balto‑Finnic cultures, and his extraordinarily detailed work of peeling back geographical and cultural layers of history has only deepened my curiosity to carry forward and reveal — through my own intuitive means — the ghostly mystery of ancient cultures.”

This is how Olev Muska describes his newly released album My Mouth Sang / My Heart Sank.
The album will be presented through a series of listening sessions and concerts in April in Tallinn, Tartu, Võru, Viljandi, Pärnu, Palamuse, Kadrina, and Rapla.
