On 7 August 2030, the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Veljo Tormis will be celebrated. To mark this special occasion, a knitting competition is being organised in his honour.
The aim of this initiative is to create a symbolic gift for the much-loved composer, born out of community creativity and a nature-oriented mindset, thereby valuing intangible cultural heritage.
This long-term initiative is being carried out in cooperation with the Estonian Folk Art and Craft Union.
When choosing patterns and designs for their entries, participants are encouraged to favour traditional patterns from Kuusalu parish, which are connected to Veljo Tormis’s roots.
Creative interpretations are also welcome, including sweaters featuring a portrait of Veljo Tormis or other visual motifs associated with him.
Entries may be inspired by Veljo Tormis’s music, his life and roots, the cultural heritage of Kuusalu and Lahemaa, runo song, Estonian folk culture or the participant’s personal interpretation.
As part of the project, participants may knit either a classic sweater or a simpler garment, such as a vest, so that beginners can also take part.
Personal interpretations from different regions and participants are welcome, as is the creative use of local traditional craft patterns.
Eligible entries include sweaters, vests and other individual sweater-like garments.
The finished item must be suitable for wearing, and its design and construction must allow it to be used in practice.
The entry does not have to be knitted. Other handicraft techniques may also be used, and different techniques may be combined.
There is no requirement to use 100% wool. Various natural and synthetic materials, as well as combinations of these, are permitted.
Participants are encouraged to be creative in their choice of materials and techniques and to produce a cohesive design that supports the idea and wearability of the entry.
Entries may include sweaters or other sweater-like garments made for people or pets. A garment intended for a person may be made for a specific wearer, for the participant themselves, or as a symbolic gift for a cultural figure, friend or loved one.
Groups may make Tormis-inspired sweaters for all their members. In this case, the group may submit the entire set as one joint competition entry.
Anyone interested may participate, regardless of age, place of residence or previous handicraft experience.
Beginners, hobbyists and professional craft makers are all welcome.
This is a nationwide initiative, and participants from outside Estonia are also welcome.
One participant may submit up to [3] competition entries.
Each item must be submitted as a separate entry, and the required information must be provided for each one.
If a participant submits several entries, each will be judged separately.
Entries must be the original work of the participant or participants.
Traditional folk-art patterns, historical patterns and local handicraft traditions may be used when creating an entry.
If a pattern, motif or other design element comes from a specific region or source, participants are asked to mention this in the entry description where possible.
The participant is responsible for ensuring that the submitted work does not infringe the copyright of other authors.
Each entry must include a short description of the idea behind the work, the origin of the material (yarn) and the making process.
The description should state the title of the entry, the materials and techniques used, and explain how the work relates to Veljo Tormis, his music, his roots or the competition theme.
If the work is inspired by a specific traditional pattern, region or handicraft tradition, this may also be mentioned in the description.
The deadline for submitting entries is 7 May 2030.
To participate, applicants must submit photographs of their knitted items. The competition committee will select the best entries based on these photographs. Participants may also present their knitted items to the committee online or in person at a committee meeting. Participants will be informed of the meeting time and place in advance.
Each submission must include the participant’s name and contact details, the title of the entry, a description of the work, and the materials and techniques used.
Entries will be evaluated by a jury appointed by the organiser. The jury members will be announced shortly before the deadline.
The main evaluation criteria will be the creativity and concept of the work and its connection to Veljo Tormis.
The jury will also assess the quality of execution, overall coherence, use of materials and techniques, and how successfully the entry works as a wearable item.
Where traditional patterns and handicraft heritage are used, their creative and appropriate application will also be evaluated.
The jury has the right to award a main prize and special prizes.
An exhibition of the submitted entries will be organised, along with a digital exhibition if possible.
The organiser and/or jury will decide which entries are selected for the exhibition.
By submitting an entry, the participant grants the organiser permission to use photographs of the entry, the participant’s name and the entry description to promote the competition, the exhibition, the digital exhibition and the “TORMIS 100” initiative.
Copyright of the entry remains with its creator.
