Veljo Tormis is one of the world’s most important choral composers. He revived Estonia’s ancient runo-song tradition. Though his early compositions often faced resistance, today’s choral culture in Estonia would be unimaginable without him. Many of his works were commissioned, and a large portion were written for the Estonian National Male Choir, whose then-conductor Olev Oja was a passionate advocate for Tormis’s groundbreaking music. Their collaboration began in 1961, and it was often this choir that premiered his compositions.
The concert by Mari Kalkun and the Estonian National Male Choir promises to be a profoundly moving and mystical experience — rumbling, echoing, resonating, and shimmering, just as Mari herself described the atmosphere after their performance at the Estonia Concert Hall.
