Mari Kalkun
Charismatic singer, songwriter and composer Mari Kalkun brings to the stage both her newest compositions and the songs that have become audience favourites.
There is something ancient and powerful in Mari's music—at once ethereal and captivating, yet raw and deeply honest. Her work has taken her around the world, touching audiences both in Estonia and far beyond.
Her recent album, Stories of Stonia, led to performances in more than twenty countries within a single year, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. The album intertwines ancient Estonian myths with contemporary Võro poetry, transforming them through Kalkun's distinctive musical language and storytelling into a powerful reflection on the challenges of today's world.
Mari has collaborated with leading figures in her field, including Real World Records, the internationally renowned label founded by Peter Gabriel; the Estonian National Male Choir (RAM); acclaimed British folk musician Sam Lee; composer and conductor Rasmus Puur; and many others.
Her work has received widespread recognition both in Estonia and internationally. Among her achievements are inclusion in The Guardian's Top 10 Albums of the Year, the 2025 Ethnokulp Musician of the Year Award, the 2024 Golden Record Award (Kuldplaat), first place in the Transglobal World Music Chart, the Estonian Cultural Endowment's Annual Award for Vocal Heritage, the ERR Musician of the Year title, and extensive airplay on the BBC and Estonian Public Broadcasting with works including Sata-Sata! and Elukoor.
Kalkun's artistic expression is driven by a profound curiosity about the world and the human soul. Her music brings together ancient traditions and living folk heritage, carrying listeners across expansive sonic landscapes into another dimension of time and place—a space that is at once light and profound, limitless in both sound and word.
