Estonian Women's and Men's Songs

Veljo Tormis’s music is one of those turtles upon whose back stands one of the three great pillars of Tõnu Kaljuste’s sound world.
The second is Arvo Pärt, and the third is everything else.

In the 1970s, Kaljuste admitted in an interview that without Tormis’s music, his choir likely would not have been born.
We don’t know what would have become of the conductor without that choir – but Kaljuste’s Choir, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, is the axis around which everything seems to have revolved.

First, they elevated Tormis to greatness and carried his deep-rooted sense of heritage out into the world. Then came a leap to the high orbits of Pärt’s music. A Grammy followed, and other international recognition.
A lot of music – of many kinds.
