„Women's Ballads“ is a concert dedicated to and inspired by Veljo Tormis’ ballet-cantata „Estonian ballads“. Musicians and dancers take an electronic and improvisational journey on the shadowy paths of Estonian runo songs that Tormis has arranged with much powerfulness.
„Women's Ballads“ consists of women’s stories of „Estonian Ballads“. Dark stories which, unfortunately, are still relevant today. About kissing a girl by force (from what in ancient times the girl was saved by a knife that she used to wear as a protection on her belt), about abandoning a child, but then acknowledging her/him again, about slaying one’s husband to once again save oneself from an unwanted man.
We can only hope that the telling of these stories will help that we ourselves nor anyone close to us have to suffer, just like at the end of the epilogue of „Estonian ballads“ words are repeating: „The wind will blow and give grace, the sun will shine and caress our heads“.
