Veronika Portsmuth's Choir Academy audiovisual concert performance explores the emotional and spiritual experiences of the human being and seeks to unlock the deeper layers that affect us. Today's world, with its openness, vulnerability and rapid dramatic changes, is leading people to question personal identity and values: to search for a deeper meaning of existence and to try to find a constantly fluctuating balance between their inner convictions and the outside world. Through musical works, the themes of war and peace, violence and hatred are also explored, and their causes and solutions sought.
The staged concert will feature choral, vocal and instrumental works from different styles and eras, creating a multi-layered narrative through the event. The musical numbers are from the world classics, popular hits from Estonia and elsewhere, and the national indentity is emphasised throughout by the music of Veljo Tormis. Experimentation and excitement is brought by Raun Juurikas' improvisational instrument, the corophone, which is used in the performance by the chamber choir singers. Musical weight and colour are added to the concert by Liisa Koemets-Bastida, a harpsichord player, saxophonist Hans A.W. Portsmuth and the characterful soloists Katrin Mandel and Marek Jürgenson. Actress Riina Maidre will also participate. Video artist Piibe Piirma creates a visual artistic plot with realistic documentary shots to the music. Reality, dreams, the past and the present are mixed together.
