What does “Curse Upon Iron” sound like performed by a 110-voice choir?
Five Tartu chamber choirs come together to celebrate Veljo Tormis’ jubilee. We’ve been preparing since the beginning of summer, working to ensure that our large choir, formed as if from many octets, delivers the most powerful piano, the most intentional tempo, and the most nuanced words.
Veljo Tormis is arguably one of the very few Estonian composers, if not the only one, who has written such a vast and varied body of choral works, suitable for choirs of all levels, that almost every Estonian choir has sung his music at least once, if not many times.
At these concerts, we will perform all the pieces together, using the original scores. All profit from ticket sales will be donated to the Veljo Tormis Virtual Centre. As a result of this collaboration, we also plan to compile a "Tormis Statistics" overview of Tartu choirs for next year.
You are warmly welcome to our concerts!
Tickets are available at Piletilevi, Piletikeskus, and Fienta until 4:00 PM on the day of the concert, and 45 minutes before the concert at the venue (card payments accepted).
Any proceeds beyond expenses will be donated to the Veljo Tormis Virtual Centre. Supporter tickets are also available: 50% of each of these is donated directly to the Virtual Centre, regardless of total concert income. If you wish to buy a supporter ticket or support the Virtual Centre through our concert, you can also make a direct transfer: see details here.
Supported by: Cultural Endowment of Estonia, City of Tartu, private donors, Estonian National Museum, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, publishers, Veljo Tormis Virtual Centre, Estonian Public Broadcasting’s sound and video archive, Klassikaraadio, Sonorus, and volunteers.
