It is a collection of 20th- and 21st-century works that explores, illuminates, and celebrates all stages of life, from birth to death. /---/ The delightful Tormis piece, Kolm mul oli kaunist sõna, features Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra flutist Julia Bogorad-Kogan weaving in and out of the vocal line, supporting and punctuating the words. Several songs will stand out as you move through the program. One is the love poem "Kolm mul oli kaunist sona" (Three I had those words of beauty) by the Estonian poet Paul-Eerki Rummo set buoyantly and flirtatiously for solo flute and choir by Veljo Tormis. It's a delight. (Philip Greenfield)

This CD is a bit more eclectic in music style; it is a somewhat disjointed collection of classical repertoire without the binding limitations of a mass or the portrayal of a particular story. In it, they include the work, much of which is new, of famed composers Steven Sametz, Walt Whitman, Eric Whitacre, Edie Hill, Timothy C. Takach, Velijo Tormis, and Maura Bosch. (Jonathan Slawson)

The nine-member vocal ensemble has been busy this summer preparing for a new national tour. They've also released a new CD, "While You Are Alive," which features works commissioned by the ensemble. "Our goal was to create a recording that celebrated life in all its aspects and stages, while at the same time, pushing all of the boundaries of what a choral album could be," said Cantus artistic director Erick Lichte. Has the Minneapolis-based group, Cantus, displaced San Francisco’s Chanticleer as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States”? That’s what critic Steven Ritter says in the latest issue of the classical music magazine Fanfare. In a review of Cantus’ new CD, “While You Are Alive,” Ritter raves about the fresh collection of new songs and song cycles, mostly written by American composers. (Rob Hubbard, 2015-11-13)
