Veljo Tormis on ‘Kullervo’s Message’, the piece comissioned by The Hilliard Ensemble: 'The Kalevala and the Baltic-Finnic epic songs contain eternal patterns of human relationships, ethical concepts and archetypal characters. Kullervo’s name is associated witht the most tragic events of the epic and symbolizes revenge and remorse.'

Most of these pieces tend towards the pure triadic sonorities and the respond forms associated with so much medieval and liturgical music – and much tonal music since that time. In Veljo Tormis’s Kullervo’s Message, the strophic structure and figurative gestures (galloping horsemen, whispering messengers of death et al) put one in mind of Schubert’s Erlkonig – but then, nineteenth-century German part-songs also have a place in The Hilliard’s discography. As the music marks its slow path through a rather morbid text, we feel the voices blend into a single destination. Kullervo’s Message, by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, recounts a dramatic episode from The Kalevala, Finland’s nineteenth-century national epic. From a line of skillfully harmonized textual lifts, Tormis hangs a series of messages by which the eponymous tragic hero is informed of the deaths of his loved ones, even as he prepares to exact his revenge upon those whose ridicule led him to such self-destructive fervor. Tormis’s melodic and programmatic colors are ideally suited to their source material, moving with the virtuosity of a master storyteller. (Tyran Grillo, 2010-06-14)

This present recording reflects their desire to expand the range of contemporary vocal pieces available at present, consisting as it does both of favourite concert pieces and of music especially written for the group to perform. /---/ With a wealth of styles in its two hours and 15 pieces, this is a remarkable collection which not only acts as a showcase for the Hilliard Ensemble's considerable talents, but also as an advertisement of all that is good in contemporary vocal writing. Highly recommended. (John Irvine, 1997-04-01)
